Women who undergo routine mammograms at the Women's Imaging Center at Paris Regional now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography. PRMC is the first hospital in Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma to feature this state-of-the-art system, SeleniaT digital mammography from Hologic®.
"Paris Regional is very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection," said Barbara Butler, PRMC COO. "Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is viewed and, more importantly, manipulated. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern."
To supplement this technology, PRMC has incorporated digital Computer-Aided Detection (CAD), again becoming the first hospital to do so in the region. Digital CAD highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer. When activated, it flags abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer. CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist's judgment.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), over 210,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected in 2006 with over 40,000 lives lost to the disease. ACS guidelines suggest yearly mammograms starting at age 40. Clinical breast exams should be part of a periodic health exam, about every three years for women in their 20's and 30's and every year for women 40 and older. Women with increased risks-family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer-should talk to their physician regarding their individual screenings.
Digital mammography feels identical to conventional screening from a patient's perspective, though women may notice shorter exam times and a reduction in call-backs to obtain additional images. Demand for the digital mammography is high, and women are excited and pleased that the Women's Imaging Center offers this state-of-the-art technology.
Women throughout the hospital's service area may make 'self-referrals' for a digital mammogram. However, it is important to have an established relationship with a physician should follow-up be necessary. |
