Christopher Dux, Paris Regional Medical Center's new chief executive officer, recently told Rotary Club of Paris members this hospital isn't the first he has had to turn around.
Dux, who has been involved in healthcare management since 1977, is going to need to draw on that experience to return Paris to the premier regional healthcare hub it once was. He is going to have to move quickly and decisively. Pardon our pun as we say he must get his "Dux" in a row.
“A lot of things need to be fixed,” the CEO admitted. But he also said he doesn't believe anything he has seen at PRMC is unique to the facility, noting, “All the problems we have exist in other facilities as well.”
Can Dux get employees to rally behind him and Essent Healthcare, the hospital's parent company? That remains to be seen, but we like what he is saying, like his belief the majority of the hospital's 1,000 employees have "a burning compassion to help others.”
“In some of our employees that passion for care and compassion is burning brighter than others, but I believe all of them have an ember inside them,” Dux said. “We can rekindle that fire, and we will do that.”
It is not going to be easy and will require more than nice speeches to civic clubs. “I don’t have the answers. The answers reside in the front line employees," the CEO said. “You have to empower them to help us make the changes we need....”
Exactly. A community effort is required, and that community includes Essent, PRMC management, doctors, nurses, other personnel, civic leaders and the hospital's customers. All must be empowered to be a part of the much-need evolution of PRMC.
Our hope is that Dux can foster the culture of change of which he speaks. Action must be taken to make the hospital a better place for patients and the employees who serve them. PRMC must become a place where patients and employees want to come.
We don't know what measures Dux hopes to implement, but we agree "it takes a culture change" with everyone wanting the best and making a commitment to get there.
