PARIS TO ATTEND TO THE STATE OF THE HEART - COURTESY OF THE PARIS NEWS
Staff Editorial

It appears Paris Regional Medical Center has its heart in the right place when it recently announced its intentions to open a first-class cardiac center.

According to PRMC chief executive officer Chris Dux, the Cardiac Center of Excellence will be "dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease."

The center is expected to be open by year's end at PRMC's north campus. That's exciting news to the medical community, and cardiac specialists.

"By creating a cardiac center of excellence, we are making a bold statement to the entire region," Khalid Shafiq, PRMC's chief of staff and a cardiac specialist said. "We're serious about providing state-of-the-art care on the level usually offered only in large metropolitan markets."

The jewel of the center is a new 64-Slice CT, an advanced non-invasive imaging technology that can produce 3-D images of the heart in seconds.

Along with state-of-the art equipment, the center is to also include a six-bed cardiac intensive care unit and a 32-bed cardiac inpatient unit with cardiac monitoring system.

It will also feature an emergency room committed to heart patients, giving doctors the opportunity to diagnose and start treatment at the earliest possible time.

We appreciate the commitment and investment of millions of dollars by PRMC's owner, Essent Healthcare, to develop the center.

With the heart center expected to serve residents of northeast Texas and southeast Oklahoma, it should help solidify PRMC's role as a regional hospital.

That's a situation that residents should be able to support.
